The Detroit Industry fresco cycle was conceived by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera (1886–1957) as a tribute to the city's manufacturing base and labor force of the 1930s. Rivera completed the twenty-seven panel work in eleven months, from April 1932 to March 1933. It is considered the finest example of Mexican mural art in the United States, and the artist thought it the best work of his career.

Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) created over 2100 works including 860 oil paintings, remarkably within a ten year period. His dedication to his art was absolute, and he returned to it repeatedly as a lifeline in between increasing psychotic episodes in the last years of his life.

In May of 1889, a year before his death, he admitted himself into an asylum in Saint-Rémy, France. During the first month of his stay, van Gogh began painting Irises, creating a composition defined by large swaths of blue flowers, orange marigolds, green leaves and red soil. Upon completion, he shipped the painting to his brother Theo, who was so taken by the work that he submitted it for exhibition at the 1889 Salon des Independents in Paris. Theo wrote to Vincent: “…it strikes the eye from afar. It is a beautiful study full of air and life.”

Louis Comfort Tiffany used drapery glass to create natural-looking magnolia petals and employed the lead lines as part of the window design, creatively incorporated as the twigs and branches of the tree. Tiffany designers, working from studies of flowers in various stages of bloom, took great care to render nature realistically.

These three leaded-glass window panels, c. 1885, graced the library of Tiffany’s 72nd Street home in New York City and later the dining room of his Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall, serving as a transition between indoors and outdoors bringing inside the flowering magnolias Tiffany loved so much.

In 1893, Louis C. Tiffany created a chapel for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago to promote his newly founded firm, Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company. Showcasing shimmering, Byzantine-inspired glass mosaics and luminous stained-glass windows, it won many awards for design.

Following the fair, the chapel was dismantled, and later purchased and gifted to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. In 1916, discovering it had suffered water damage, Tiffany had the chapel removed and reinstalled at his home, Laurelton Hall. After his death in 1933, portions were sold, and later in 1957, a devastating fire damaged what remained. Jeannette McKean, founder of the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum in Florida, visited the site and ultimately purchased the components of the chapel.

In 1996, the Morse Museum assembled a conservation team to begin the restoration. After more than 100 years, it was reopened to the public in April 1999. Tiffany’s spectacular Field of Lilies window can be seen in the reconstructed baptistery of the chapel.

William Morris (1834-1896) was an artist, designer, poet, social activist, and a founder of the Arts and Crafts movement. As a response to the low-quality mass-produced products resulting from the Industrial Revolution, Morris based his firm, Morris & Co., on the concept of fine hand-crafted goods. Hugely successful, his studio created artisanal home décor items including wallpaper, fabrics, embroideries, and tapestries.

Inspired by the English countryside, Morris turned tangled cottage gardens into richly detailed patterns. Our luminary recreates the beautiful Tulip and Willow design which features scrolling willow branches woven through with fanciful tulips in full bloom.

Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was an American painter and printmaker. At the age of 15, over the objections of her family, she began her art training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1865, impatient with the academy’s restrictive and patronizing environment for female students, she decided to travel abroad to study painting in Paris and explore the museums of Europe.

Settling permanently in France in 1874, Cassatt exhibited at the Paris Salon, where she met Edgar Degas who invited her to join the Impressionists and was to become her friend and mentor. “I accepted with joy,” she said. “I took leave of conventional art. I began to live.”

Cassatt’s technique changed greatly under the influence of the Impressionists. Best known for her contemporary scenes of mothers and children, Lilacs in a Window is one of her rare still lifes. Our delightful luminaries feature a detail of the softly textured brush strokes that describe the delicate purple and white spring blossoms.

The lush green shamrock is abundant in Ireland and its national emblem. St. Patrick is said to have used the trefoil plant to help explain the Holy Trinity to non-believers. It was worn as a symbol of solidarity during the Irish Rebellion against the British in the 18th century. Wearing a bit of green on St. Patrick’s Day also protects you from being pinched by mischievous leprechauns, or impish children.

What’s the difference between shamrocks and clover? They are in the same family, but shamrocks have only three leaves, while clover can have more. Still, it’s lucky to be Irish, even if only for one day on March 17th, and luckier still to find a four-leaf clover. The Charmed luminary has one hidden among the shamrocks. Man has been sailing the oceans for thousands of years. Early mariners traveled along the coastlines in sight of land, relying on landmarks to estimate their position and progress.

Over time, sailors developed methods of navigating by observing the sun and stars. However, plotting a course on overcast days without visible celestial markers was not possible, so the invention of the compass in the 12th century was crucial for ocean travel. A hundred years later, navigation charts were created to map the coastlines and keep detailed records of voyages.

The age of exploration gave rise to the invention of the spyglass in 1608, helpful in spotting land, and identifying other ships, friend or foe. Dating back to ancient Egypt, lighthouses still play an important part in navigation. They warn sailors of dangerous shallows and rocky coasts, and help guide vessels safely in and out of harbors.

Ever wonder where watermelons came from? This sweet summertime treat can be traced back to wild varieties growing in the deserts of southern Africa 5000 years ago. Unlike its modern counterpart, the watermelon’s ancestor was bitter-tasting and originally grown only for its ability to retain water when stored for the dry seasons.

Over time, the bitterness was bred out of it, and was already sweet enough to enjoy freshly sliced in the time of the Egyptian pharaohs. Through further cultivation, the watermelon’s originally pale yellow inside would also change. Interestingly, the gene for the color red is paired with the gene that determines sugar content. So as watermelons were bred to be sweeter, the interior gradually changed to a delicious red.
