Starry Night Over the Rhone, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 at Arles, is a serene evening landscape. The artist captured the soft palette of the night and the reflections of the gaslight lamps, paling in comparison to the stars above. It was a happier time for van Gogh, and he wrote to his brother Theo about the work “…under a gas lamp. The sky is aquamarine, the water is royal blue, the ground is mauve. The town is blue and purple. The gaslight is yellow and its reflections are russet gold descending down to a green bronze…Two colorful figures of lovers in the foreground.”
